Blog Student News Trainees/Teacher News

Dear Yogis,

I have newsletter, I have emailed, I have asked, and still the same lovely people respond to our luncheon invitation.  We are not inviting you to a gallows viewing, this is lunch at The Victoria, 12 noon on Saturday, THIS SATURDAY, TOMORROW!!!  If you are not meeting “The Swift person (Taylor Swift)”, which would be a good excuse for some, could you please join us.

Right now you might think the Sangha (the group) is not important, but when things get tough as they did in lockdown, suddenly we become a life-line.  Don’t let us languish.  “Sex in the City” the sitcom was based around a group of women supporting each other through thick and thin, and there are many such groups.. ours could be one of them – our core group already is.  Please take this opportunity to join us.

THE ART.

Yes, its is that time again – my studio is open for viewing and nibbles on Friday evening the 3rd May from 5.30 to 7.30 and again the following day, Saturday  from 2.30 to 5pm.

I am doing fabulous photo transfers of my art onto 8inch x 8inch canvases.  When you hold them against the light they glow – it is quite beautiful.  I am going to make some hanging wires so that they can be hung in a window, rather than just hung on a wall, which is still possible of course.

Each one is hand done, individual, each one is different… The one of Buddhas Hands on the right is quite a bit larger and more ornate, made to go an a wall or above an altar.  It would look lovely in candle light.   You will have to come and see them for yourself.  mark it in your diary – 37 Morris Road, Woodend.  I will be putting some on Etsy, but they will have to include postage, so will be a little dearer.  Cost from $75 to $250 (plus postage?), which considering they are individual artworks on canvas, is reasonable.

I am working on some angel wings at the moment, which will be finished on time for the opening.

Namaste – Jahne

Dear Yogis,

Firstly a reminder that our yoga luncheon is on again this Saturday
– it is unbelievable that one month has passed since we lunched at “600 Above”.  This Saturday at 12 noon we will be meeting at The Victoria Hotel in Woodend.  We have been there before, and now they have a new chef for us to experience.  Their pizzas have always been fabulous, their desserts excellent… and of course their great range of wines (and and non-ac) are reasonably priced,  plus you can have a good coffee afterwards – not always available at other venues.  The picture was taken pre-covid when the blue lady stood outside in the snow.  It felt very “snowy” this morning

FIRE ON THE ICE…

I have been watching a program about the release of methane gas in areas that used to be permafrost at the north pole.  As you know methane is a very dangerous gas and there are huge reservoirs of it under the ice – spectacular when it catches fire on top of ice lakes.  What will happen when the concentrations increase beyond our control…?

Methane is formed by the breaking down of plants and is a natural process that we have been taking advantage of for hundreds of years.  This has has been stabilised by the temperature of the permafrost above it, but now, as the permafrost is retreating these stores of methanols are being released into the atmosphere.

Science doesn’t really know what impact this will have because we have never had to deal with it before, and as the earths temperature increases the situation continues to change radically.  We are probably the last generation that will have the opportunity to deal with this problem – we have to slow down the retreat of the ice to give us more time.

We can all do simple things – installing solar panels, maybe investing in nuclear energy to boost our stores until alternatives take over, driving less, flying much less and so on.  But we have to change,  and we humans don’t like change, especially change that has been thrust upon us.

Dear Yogis,

I have just been reading the PREPPERS Survival courses and guides.  America has been gearing up for some time – we are only now getting into step.  It doesn’t mean anyone is anticipating global war, but we all are anticipating global warming which could threaten food, and essential services, or bushfires and floods which we have experienced to date.  I know from experience that change happens suddenly, unexpectedly, and challenges how well we are prepared.  Around my suburb we have suffered protracted power outages (days not hours), and I have experienced bushfires.  So I am reasonably well placed to say “listen up!”

It also occurs to me that teens (especially teen males) are suffering from anxiety from media attention on the terrible things that are happening, and taking one of these peppers courses could give their fears a useful focus.  Nothing is worse than feeling threatened and helpless – even if you can’t really identify where the fear is coming from.

During covid I ran a BLOG -“Wild and Weedy”, where I spoke about collecting wild greens, dealing with no toilet paper, eating differently, even making a small stove from flower pots.  Survival notwithstanding, more people tuned in when I occasionally had a rant about Coles than they did on more constructive blogs – and the attendance spiked when I showed how to make port and gin, than when i spoke about foraging!

For more information Google or go to “Noah’s Eden Bushcraft 2 day course”.  It is held in the Grampians, and 2 days is do’able don’t you think.  Something teens could commit to.

“NEW” WORK.

We have seduced ourselves by the misunderstanding that breakthroughs happen fully formed, however it’s a myth.  What actually happens is that we practise our way into it.

Doing these small canvasses is a perfect example of that.  No matter their small size (8inches x 8 inches) they are taking a lot of work and thought to complete, and I am having to use all of my skills, even those learned working in the Icon restoration department at MOMA many years ago.  Importantly what to show, and what not to show.

I plan to complete eight.  I am trying to get four mostly unframed into my next OPEN STUDIO on the 3rd and 4th of May (if they don’t sell before then).
